A Few Words About Us

About The Captain
Westport Point Fishing Charter is owned and operated by Jim Turner, a Coast Guard licensed Captain. Jim, and most of his family and friends, love being on the water. We love being part of a coastal community. We love to fish. We love nature. Foremost, we love each other.
Growing up in Westport, Jim has been fishing the waters of Buzzard’s Bay and R. I. Sound for well over 50 years. It is a wonderful environment in which to grow. Nature abounds on our beautiful coastal community.
He learned much about the river, fishing and quohauging on the east branch of the Westport River from his grandfather, “Gum”. In those days, boats were all wood, and Gum’s vessel was a mahogany trimmed lapstreak Lyman.

Jim has been a teacher for over 50 years.  He began teaching High School kids in Sunday school as a young man. He followed thatwith a26-year career as a High School Biology Teacher in the second alternative high school in the nation. For the past 13 years Jim has had the good fortune to teach Marine Sciences to 6th graders at Camp Bournedale in Plymouth.  In so doing, he has also learned a lot more about the coastal environment in which he lives. Jim is grateful that he has had the good fortune to work with so many intelligent, knowledgeable, and sensitive folks.

With a new (to him) 28-footCape Horn boat, lobster pots set, rods, reels, tackle, and the aforementioned history, it seems time for the next logical step. Jim can do the things he loves; Teaching, enjoying the splendors of nature, and FISHING.

About The Crew

Helpers are volunteer family and friends that are well-familiar with fishing my boats.  They can help me navigate and negotiate the waterways, as well as do some of the “grunt” work. Each is fully capable of aiding our guests with their fishing needs as they arise. For charters of various educational goals, the crew will be matched accordingly

Don

Don Dyer brings to Westport Point Fishing Charters decades of experience as a sport fisherman and marine science educator. His qualifications include working as mate and oceanography instructor with OceanQuest of Woods Hole, fisheries data collection, leading wilderness canoe trips, ten years as a naturalist for the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, and much more.   Jim depends on Don heavily for his vast knowledge of “all things fish”.

Kristina

Kristina “the Tog Queen” is Jim’s youngest daughter who has been a massage therapist for more thantwelve years.  She is currently running her own business and successfully enjoying her autonomy.  A fantastic fisherperson, Kristina is a great asset to have aboard.

Jay

Jay is an English instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, R.I. He is both an excellent saltwater fisherman and a freshwater angler as well. Having fished many waters including Monterey Bay, CA, several Cascade creeks in the Pacific Northwest, and Western Alaska’s Kuskokwim River, Jay is a strong, dependable, and knowledgeable person to have aboard.

Kate

Kate is our birdwatching, nature loving photographer. She is the creator/owner of “The Scenes of New England”website. Her photographic work is almost as beautiful as she is.
